Substance Use and Addiction

According to Doug Sellman, author of “The 10 Most Important Things Known About Addiction” an article for The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry, there are a multitude of ways in which substances and addictive/compulsive behaviors arise for people over the course of their lives. Studies have shown that substance use, abuse and addiction tend to be progressive and compulsive in nature, with many biological processes happening outside of a person’s awareness. Some have often found themselves saying “how did this happen?” or “how did I get here?” when referring to the ways in which they use or abuse substances, caffeine, food, nicotine, gambling, pornography, shopping or gaming to name a few. It’s science! Some people’s brains merely react differently to drugs and alcohol than others. The shame and guilt attached for those struggling can often be overwhelming, alas you don’t have to go through this process alone.

Family Roles and Addiction

Not only does substance use affect the individuals using them but addiction and substance abuse affects families and relationships as a whole. It can often be confusing or frustrating for loved one’s watching someone struggle with addiction. The need for compassion and support remains just as high as there is often a fine lune many find between supporting and enabling a person when in active addiction so being able to have the knowledge, tools and support for family is just as important as the treatment for the person struggling.

Substance Use and Co-occurring Disorders

Many individuals who struggle with substance use also struggle with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders and trauma to name a few. People may often say their use of substances is in an effort to help cope with some of their mental health symptoms and though it may seem beneficial and have fleeting effects, the long term ramifications of on-going substance use can be serious.
