There is a sense of relief when you open the door to your home and are immediately greeted by a wet nose and a rapidly wagging tail; and science has shown that owning a dog actually has benefits related to your health.
Physical Health
Owning a dog encourages physical activity. While dogs have varying levels of activity requirements, most dogs will need to go outside to walk and play, which encourages dog owners to be more active. Regular exercise can help you to stay fit, improve cardiovascular health, and can aid in maintaining a healthy weight.
Reduce Stress
Multiple research studies over the years have proven that petting a dog can release oxytocin, a hormone that aids in relaxation and bonding. Interacting with dogs can also lower a person’s stress levels and make them feel more calm.
Strengthen Mental Health
Dogs retain the title of “Man’s Bestfriend” for a reason- they provide excellent companionship and affection. Having a dog can improve a person’s mental health as their presence often stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine; neurotransmitters that are responsible for feeling happiness. On a more visible level than neurotransmitters, dogs can also increase social interactions. People with dogs tend to engage more with others while out on walks, or at dog parks- a great solution to social isolation.
Improve Sleep
Dog owners often report that having a dog nearby or in their room can provide immense comfort and a sense of security, which, in turn, can lead to better sleep.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a word that is often thrown around in the therapy room; and it’s a quality that can be improved through the help of our K-9 companions. Dogs live in the present which can help dog owners to emulate this quality. People who interact with their dogs can break their cycle of rumination by shifting their focus from past events to enjoying the present moment. Playing with your dog or even observing them in action can shift focus — and there is so much joy in watching a dog have fun in the present moment (especially if they have one of their favorite toys)!
While dogs can not solve all of one’s problems, they can bring a positive perspective and presence to a person’s life.
