Therapy is a wonderful thing to utilize and can be such a safe experience, but starting therapy can be scary. Not only is looking for a therapist difficult, but the firsts can always be uncomfortable, no matter how good the thing we are starting can be. In this blog, I want to share what you can find in a Works Counseling Center Office. I want to show you what you might find and share what you can expect and use to bring comfort as you get to know your new therapist.
Therapy is a wonderful thing to utilize and can be such a safe experience, but starting therapy can be scary. In this blog, I want to share what you can find in a Works Counseling Center Office. Once you are checked in, and your therapist has brought you back into the therapy office, there are many things in the room that can help you feel comfortable. Now, no two offices are the same, but there are a number of comfort objects in each therapy office that are yours to use when in the session. The first, and my personal favorite, is the blanket. Almost every office has at least two blankets. While we don’t supply weighted blankets, these blankets can offer comfort if the room is too cold, or just having something in your hands and lap can also be a comfort.
Not only do we have comfort objects, but we also have sensory objects. For this blog, we will call it our fidget toy box. Every room should have a fidget toy box stocked with different sensory toys that fit your sensory needs. A few examples could be stress balls, thinking putty, bendy sticks, fidget cubes, and many more. Each box has several different toys, and you are welcome to use them at any time in a session. My personal favorites are the stress balls and fidget cubes.
Another exciting find in the offices at Works Counseling Center is a bowl of candy. The bowl will always be stocked and you can pick a sweet treat anytime. You can choose from many candies—everything for our chocolate lovers, sweet tooth, and even sour fixations. Candy may not always have a therapeutic purpose, but it makes the space more welcoming and allows for a treat you may need.
The last two things I want to share in this blog are only in some offices. These two items are special items utilized in specific offices or based on the therapist’s preference. The first I’ll share is scented candles. Only some therapists use scented candles, so only some offices will have them. While we utilize scented candles, let the therapist know if you have olfactory sensitivities, and we will not light these candles during your sessions.

The last thing you will find in one of our offices is in our sand tray room. In this room, a wall is dedicated to the figurines used in this form of therapy. Sand Tray is a form of play therapy that is utilized to help clients process in a different method than talk therapy. Not every therapist uses this form of therapy, but it is held and kept in one of our offices. So, if you find yourself in this office, you may find some awesome figurines keeping you company while in session.

I hope you enjoyed this little walk through our offices and find some comfort in knowing what you may find in the therapy room ahead of time. Therapy is a place for you to heal and explore. Here at Works Counseling Center, we strive to create a safe space for you to do the work needed in therapy.
